Best Time to Catch Roosterfish in Costa Rica
A closer look at tides, conditions, seasons and what can influence a successful day targeting roosterfish.

Roosterfish on topwater is probably one of the most exciting bites you can experience in saltwater fishing.
Roosters are incredibly fast, aggressive, and powerful, and while getting them to bite can sometimes be complicated depending on the conditions, there are days when a topwater lure is your best bet.
We've had many days fishing here in Quepos where we're slow trolling live bait behind the boat without getting a single bite. Then we pick up the spinning rods, start casting topwater lures, and suddenly we have multiple roosterfish chasing them.
When a big rooster commits to a lure, you'll often see its huge dorsal fin cutting through the surface as it accelerates behind the bait.
Pound for pound, roosterfish are one of our favorite species to target on our inshore fishing trips in Costa Rica. A big rooster doesn't give up easily.
Expect a powerful initial run, a hard fight back toward the boat, and usually another couple of strong runs when you think the fish is finally finished.
Roosterfish can be aggressive, unpredictable and incredibly exciting. These are some of the techniques we rely on when targeting them around Quepos, Costa Rica.
Casting distance is extremely important.
We like heavier lures that allow us to cover a lot of water and reach fish without having to put the boat directly on top of them.
Poppers, stickbaits and fast-moving surface lures can all work. The best choice depends on the bait, sea conditions and how aggressively the roosterfish are feeding that day.
This is one of the biggest things we tell our anglers:
Roosterfish love the hunt. A baitfish trying to escape can trigger their predatory instinct, and these fish are more than fast enough to catch your lure.
If a rooster strikes and misses, keep reeling! Don’t stop the lure because you missed the first bite. Many times the fish will turn around and attack it again.
The moment you stop, that rooster may lose interest. Watching a big rooster miss once, accelerate again, put its dorsal fin out of the water and finally crush the lure is something you don’t forget.
If you're hiring a fishing charter specifically because you want to catch roosterfish on artificial lures, make sure you choose the right operation.
A lot of inshore boats are primarily set up for slow trolling live bait. There is nothing wrong with that — live bait is extremely effective — but fishing artificial lures requires a different approach.
At Fly Legend, we love fishing this way. Instead of simply trolling through an area, we're constantly watching the water, looking for bait, birds, structure, current and those unmistakable roosterfish dorsal fins.
Whenever possible, we try to have live bait ready before the charter.
At Fly Legend, we'll often go looking for live bait the day before your trip. If bait is available and we're able to catch it, we don't have to spend valuable fishing time searching for bait the following morning.
This matters because catching live bait isn't always easy. Some mornings it's everywhere; other mornings it simply doesn't want to bite.
Some of our best days targeting roosterfish on artificial lures happen early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially when the conditions and tides line up.
Topwater rooster fishing is incredibly fun, but it isn't necessarily for everyone.
These aren't tiny freshwater plugs. The lures can be heavy, you're making long casts, and you may be casting repeatedly before finding the right fish.
And remember — we still have to find the roosterfish. Depending on the tides, bait and conditions, we usually have a good idea where the fish should be.
Sometimes they're exactly where we expect them. Other days, we have to work harder and cover more water.
Keep reeling. Don't stop. That rooster is faster than you think.
